Understand the Risk Factors Associated with Eye Cancer

Eye Cancer is very rare to occur, it starts with the eye and as the eye has different parts therefore there are different types of eye cancers. Cancers in the eye is also referred as Intraocular Cancers, basically there are two types of cancers found in the eye:

  • Primary Intraocular Cancers – This cancer starts inside the eye ball, it may occur in adults as well as children. Melanoma and Lymphoma are the two most common primary intraocular cancers which affects adults. Its other types include retinoblastoma (starts in the cell in the retina) and medulloepithelioma (extremely rare type), these two types mainly occur in children.
  • Secondary Intraocular Cancers – The cancer type starts from any other part of the body and then arises in the eye fall down in this category. Actually they are not truly eye cancers but are found more commonly than primary intraocular cancers. Common types of cancers that could spread to the eye include, breast and lungs cancers.

Appropriate Eye Cancer Symptoms and Their Causes

Often people with melanoma do not found any symptoms but it could be detected during a regular eye examination. The most common Eye Cancer Symptoms include:

  • Painless Loss of Vision
  • Seeing Floaters or Flashes of Light
  • A growing dark spot or line on the Iris
  • Change in the size and shape of Pupil
  • Bulging of the Eye
  • Change in the eye movement within the socket

Pain is rare unless the tumor has grown extensively outside the eye. Although it is not necessary always that these symptoms indicates eye cancer, may occur due to some eye infection. So it is better to get examined by the doctor before reaching to any conclusion.

Certain risk factors and Eye Cancer Causes include:

  • Age – The average age of diagnosing melanoma is 55 but it may be found in any age group. Mostly the people over the age of 50 are likely to get this cancer but children and people over the age of 70, obtain this cancer rarely.
  • Pigmentation – It is found that primary intraocular melanoma is more common in white people and less common in black people.
  • Gender – Melanoma equally affects men and women all over the world.
  • Sunlight – People who are over exposing themselves to the sunlight are at higher risk of causing melanoma, mainly the harmful UV radiations are responsible for this. Exposure before the age of 30 plays a very crucial role in developing eye cancers.
  • Other Factors – Infection with HIV, HPV Infection, Drugs that suppresses the Immune System.

For most of the people, Eye Cancer Treatment can completely remove or destroy the cancer. But the patient is required to follow all the assisted regulations to finish the treatment. Although the treatment depends on the current stage of the cancer but most common treatment techniques are:

  • Active Surveillance or Observation
  • Surgery
  • Removal of an Eye
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Laser Therapy

It is not possible to recover from cancer all the time, because advanced cancers are difficult to treat successfully. So try to prevent any condition of causing such a life threatening disease as Eye Cancer and be healthy.
